There are basically only two things you need to keep to be able to perform music - in tune (vertical) and in time (horizontal). Keeping in time means being able to produce notes at a given time in relation to a. the notes before and after, b. the notes produced by other performers involved in your performance, and/or c. the tempo set by your conductor.
